My Best Cat

MY BEST CAT - a Furry Murder Mystery.  While this book is a departure from my usual work (read: adult humor), it is by far the funniest, and one that I wish had garnered more attention.  Maybe it would have if I put more effort into promoting it.  I'm in the process of making it available on Kindle and so it's gotten something of a facelift, with a new cover and all.  The cover illustration is a watercolor I did called, "The Blue Curtain".  Some people will recognize the breed of cat as a blue Abyssinian, which is featured in the story.

There is something deliciously naughty in writing fiction (adult humor) about people whom you have known.  In MY BEST CAT I have combined some of the most horrendous qualities from a few real-life despicable characters in the deranged hobby known as the cat fancy.  Writing can be a cloak-and-dagger form of personal protection.  Karma is in your hands.

The characters shall remain fictitious, but here is a short teaser passage from an early chapter, just to give you a taste.  Oh, and did I mention there is some adult humor?

“Hold still!” Roxanne barked.  She stood with her butt sticking way out while she groomed my Somali.  She would bend over while she combed Kenya’s britches, then grab the tip of his tail and shake, shake, shake the hair so it fell down backwards.  It made his tail real fluffy, and made her butt shake at the same time.  Kenya’s back feet would be lifted off the carpeted grooming table, but he didn’t care.  He just kept right on purring and smiling that kitty smile.  He was that dumb.

The real goal in Roxanne’s grooming yoga was to get Jack, the guy down the row, to look at her ass.  Jack was married to a giddy, heavy-set blonde named Tracy.  But he and Roxanne had been carrying on for a few weeks, and were fresh in the throes of new lust.  Jack pretended to be oblivious to Roxanne’s grooming efforts, but it was only pretend.  He rattled the newspaper he was reading, but I saw his eyes roll briefly toward the target area as he turned the page.  It made me want to gag.  Nothing more nauseating than being witness to someone else’s foreplay.

I didn’t think Jack was all that attractive.  He had pasty skin, a fading mustache, and overall he looked sort of used and dull.  But he was one of the only straight guys in the cat crowd who was over eight and under sixty.  And he was great with the cats, handling them gently and with adulation.  As a result, he was object of perpetual crushes of various cat fanciers.  While other husbands scorned the cat shows, Jack came weekend after weekend, trundling the grooming carts, fetching litter and water, and pinning up lacy cage curtains.  I could understand why.  In the real world, Jack was a dork.  In the cat world, he was a god.

Blue Heron Watercolor

One of my favorites. Those of us who frequent shorelines and wetlands have certainly heard the familiar croak of this enormous bird. I've seen herons all over the country, from the rivers in Arizona to the rocky shores of my own Drummond Island Michigan. Natives and lovers of Drummond might be able to see the shape of the island camoflauged in the wing feathers -- to others it is just a nice watercolor of a big wading bird.

Clifford Auditions for David Letterman's "Stupid Pet Tricks"

Aunt Vickie found out that Channel 6 in Lansing was holding auditions for "Late Night With David Letterman". We immediately realized that as a budding artist, Clifford needed to try out by painting Dave's portrait. We hauled him back downstate yesterday and today, we gave him a bath, with the help of Vickie's niece, Ellie. Ellie washed his feet, and he obligingly lifted his tootsies so she could get the bottoms too.

After his bath, Aunt Vickie boosted Ellie aboard for a photo opp...

"Cliffy's Angels"

Brushing out his tail was a group effort.

When we arrived at the auditions, I spent a little time warming Clifford up. He was acting like he didn't really feel like painting. I urged him to find his muse.

I decided to put him to work, making him concentrate on other things besides his art. We did some walking in the parking lot and even some longeing.

He was earning some clicks and apples but his efforts were pretty half-hearted.

He just wasn't into his tricks like he normally is. I was a little worried that he might not paint at all.

Then, just before we were to go on, I realized what was missing: He wanted praise! I started scratching him and hugging him and telling him how great he was, and he perked right up. Then he really got into it.

We had set up the table with Dave's portrait in a frame. When the crew started filming, Clifford marched right over to the table with me, grabbed the sponges and did a quick painting of Dave.

He painted a blue circle, then a red stripe for the tie. Then he did a fleshy spot in the circle for the face. He finished it off with some grey hair at the top.

This is the photo he worked from.

Quite a striking likeness! We wonder if Dave will call.

Clifford's New Watercolors - More Real "Equine Art"!

It took some coaxing to get him to work today. He just didn't have the muse. I think it was due in part to the humongous new round bale he has had his head jammed in since last night.

The textures on this one are from a new type of sponge, which Cliffy didn't seem to fancy. He did better when we reverted to the old, smaller square type. Anyway, I think this one looks rather springlike.

"Bear Foot" -- this is one of my favs.

This is the first and only painting (so far) where Clifford has used his hoof to move paint. Part of this was done with a sponge, but you can see the swipe marks from his hoof. I was going to offer this one for sale, but Dad pointed out that this looks like a horse! I can clearly see the head profile and flowing mane. So now, I have to keep it.

Equine Watercolor Workshop

I'm trying something new! Here is a video I took while painting one of my commissions, a watercolor of Comanche. I turned it into an art lesson, revealing some of my secret watercolor techniques. If you like to paint, or just like watching the creative process, this might be for you.

Today's Watercolor - Stargazer Lily

I couldn't get the colors in this to reproduce very well. This is watercolor and oil pencil on stretched canvas, about 4 x 4". Watercolor tends to roll right off the canvas so there were some logistical problems with getting the color to adhere. It was a gift for a friend's 40th birthday.

Today's Equine Art - Seabiscuit

I confess I didn't know much about Seabiscuit before Laura Hillenbrand's book came out. When I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I was completely taken up in this wonderful story. When the movie came out, I saw it in the theatre no less than six times! I chose to do this portrait in sepia tones, to reflect on the time in history that Seabiscuit raced.

This is watercolor, 11 x 15", listed on eBay.

Today's Watercolor - Sheltie

I did this piece in a sort of painterly style, with strokes reminiscent of an oil base paint. I like the effect of the dog's fur, as if it is blowing around. It's about 11 x 15". It's on eBay.

Today's Watercolor - Swans

This was inspired by some pics I took of a pair of swans and their cygnets, which I have been visiting regularly. I started photographing this swan painting as I went along. I started the painting with a pencil sketch, then followed by using my handy masquepen, to block out the white areas in the painting.

I started blocking in large areas of color, including the algae areas, and the water. I will need to add several layers to the water. I rubbed off the masking fluid, but will need to continue tomorrow as I am outta daylight!

Clifford's New Watercolors - Real "Equine Art"!

Today's watercolor, above, has appeared as an elated dog running through a field of flowers.

This one is another angel. I love the blue wing. Clifford has marked both of these with his hoofprint. In this angel piece, his hoof print is in the upper left corner, like a halo!

This angel is on eBay.

Clifford Learns to Paint

Today we tried something new. Clifford learned to paint with watercolors, using a sponge. I made a YouTube video of the process.

He did this painting first, which I am saving to give to Dad.

This one, which I call "Drummond Island Sunset", was Clifford's second attempt:

I posted this one on eBay. I think they both are very interesting and beautiful and we sure had fun doing it!

Today's Equine Art - Watercolor

"Miss Legs" was a favorite of mine, and I've been sitting on it for a few years but finally decided to part with her. Foaling season is starting here in Michigan. The birth rate is down due to the slow economy, which may be for the best. I do miss seeing the usual number of baby pictures though. So this girl will always be a baby, always in that new stage of discovering the world. This painting is a nice size, 11 x 14", on good quality paper.

Today's Note Cards - Australian Terriers

I posted some more horse notes the other day and yesterday some German shepherds. Today I found this old watercolor of some Australian Terriers. I took a photo of the adult dog at a dog show. For some reason, I decided to paint it decimating a petunia bed with some puppies! The original is long sold, but divvied up, it makes a cute set of note cards for eBay.

Today's Watercolor - Golden Eagle

...Is a golden eagle. I never seem to have any time to paint wildlife. So today I decided to just go for it! Life is short.

This piece is about 8 x 10", Listed on eBay.

Here is a Sheltie Agility design. The first letter of each line in the poem spells out, "Agility".

Today's Watercolor - Reining Horses

Thanks to Laurie Zaporzan who busted me out of my current slump by sending me a barrage of neat photos, and giving me carte blanche. Laurie has a terrific eye for composition, and this is my interpretation of her pic of a group of reiners waiting to go into an event.

This piece is watercolor on pastel board, about 6 x 18", and it will be reluctantly and painfully offered for sale.
