My Pal Clifford!

We took our long overdue first ride of the year today. Cliffy's knee had been bothering him quite a bit, so I treated it two days ago with some StemEquine plus Bute. It was big and swollen. I mean, even bigger than usual. I think he may have twisted it. Today when he came running to greet me, I knew it felt better. I got him saddled up and then we just went a mile or so down the road. He was really stiff. His steps were short, especially in the beginning of the ride. But when we got to the neighbor's back field, to cut across behind the barn, he became his old self. He loves running across that field. I had a struggle keeping him at the walk. He's so out of shape and still has so much winter fat, that I want to take it slow and get that knee feeling better.

After our ride, he posed for his picture.

My friends and I went for our first long ride of the season last week. We went for miles down the beach. I rode my youngest and she was a fireball waiting to explode. My 17hh gelding bucked ad reared up far too much with my experienced ride niece on but my little Canadian mare was perfect under my inexperienced cousin.
My experience is to give my horses raw potatoes, two everyday to help with little problems. They really work and bute isn't needed. For a horse with problems, I start off with 6 potatoes and wean the down to 2 in about a week.
I'm leaving a link to what I wrote about the subject, just in case you want to know more.
